The Structure of Crystal

Original Title: Struktura krysztalu

Director: Krzysztof Zanussi
Story: Krzysztof Zanussi, Edward Zebrowski
Cast: Barbara Wrzesinska, Jan Myslowicz, Andrzej Zarnecki
Year: 1969
Country: Poland

The film spans the length of Marek's (Andrzej Zarnecki) visit to his fellow physicist friend Jan (Jan Myslowicz) and his wife's countryside cottage. Marek prefers the life of the city while Jan and his wife are more at home in the countryside. The film offers a very realistic portrayal of the life of two people who happen to be physicists, rather than the other way round.

When the two do have conversations about physics sombre music cuts in to drown them out. The dark tone of the music projecting the anticipated gap in the audience's comprehension onto the real-life cerebral work of the two physicists. However, apart from this bit of distancing Zanussi proffers the everyday activities of the three simply yet with much panache. A hint of sparks between Marek and Jan's wife are displayed but all three characters seem much too grounded and conscious of their responsibilities to risk upsetting their shared bond.
